Secure Baseline – What it is and Why it’s Important

A secure baseline with regard to an IT system comprises “the minimum security controls required for safeguarding the system, based on its identified needs for confidentiality, integrity and/or availability protection.”

Cybersecurity Risk in the Education Sector

The Education sector in the US has been relentlessly targeted by cybercriminals over the past 2-3 years. Attacks grew both in frequency and the damage they caused as classes moved online in 2020, (following the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic) and massive volumes of data were made accessible to students, teachers and administrators over the internet. Cybercrime in the sector continued to increase after the worst phases of the pandemic were over. According to cyber-attack trend data released by Check Point Research, the education sector was the most attacked globally in 2022. Educational institutions as a whole were hit by 2,314 attacks per week – an increase of 43 percent over the previous year.

Cybersecurity Challenges in the Manufacturing Sector

The Manufacturing sector has come under an increasing number of cyber attacks over the past few years because of the growing interconnectedness between IT and Operational Technology (OT). Organizations in the sector have traditionally prioritized operational speed and efficiency over cyber risk management – something that may not have created huge security issues at a time when there was a clear separation between OT and IT. However, with more manufacturing technology (often older and less secure that IT) and processes now exposed to the internet, it’s getting harder for manufacturers to secure their operations and data against attacks. According to PwC’s 2023 Global Digital Trust Insights study, the use of “outdated software and vulnerability management tools” is the biggest security challenge in the sector.

Cybercrime and Data Breaches in the Finance Sector

Financial Services is among the most frequently targeted industries by cybercriminals because of the valuable financial data and critical assets that it gives them access to, and because digitization in the sector has opened up new attack opportunities. Organizations in the sector control large volumes of valuable data, which can be easily monetized if leaked or stolen. Financial institutions are also part of a growing interconnected network of third-parties, partners, and applications to make customers’ digital experiences smoother – expanding their attack surface and making these institutions even more vulnerable to both direct and third-party attacks.

Cybercrime and the Dark Web

The dark web is a subset of unindexed websites on the internet (the deep web) that can only be accessed via specialized software or tools. The most well-known of these tools is The Onion Router or TOR browser, that redirects web traffic through a series of different routers, thus masking IP addresses and providing anonymity to those using it.
